That Sucks!

Each week I plan to focus upon one common sign of stress and give each reader a little more of an insight as to why these signs happen and more importantly how they can be managed

Physical Tension: Tight muscles, headaches, or back pain are common physical symptoms of stress.

This tension occurs because of one of two reasons:

  1. Hyperstimulation

When stress responses occur daily, this regular release of stress hormones into the body leads to a generalised state of emergency response. Our bodies were designed for stress to be short term thus allowing time to recover. This lack of recovery that we are seeing commonly now, can be a significant trigger for ill health in the future

2. The stress response

The moment we believe we could be in danger, the body secretes stress hormones into the bloodstream. This creates a physiological change in the body where muscular contraction is seen causing a physical tension to build up in various parts of the body (fear, fight or flight), making the body hyper-attentive and ready to respond to any attack that comes its way. This in turn creates an emotional change.

Management of physical tension caused by stress in three easy steps:

1. End the active stress response

Bring an end to the stress response and its changes to your body by physically taking yourself out of that specific environment. Time away will create a window for recovery. And it is this recovery that will allow you to start feeling normal again.

Keep in mind that it can take up to 20 minutes or more for the body to recover from a major stress response.

2. Self care

One can height the recovery process not only by reducing your stress, but also practicing:    A. relaxed breathing,

B. working at calming your body down,

C. increasing your rest and relaxation, and

D. not worrying about this symptom.

3. Therapy

Once the physical tension has come under control it must be remembered that if the underlying factors that cause issues with tension aren’t addressed, it’s just a matter of time until the body is overly stressed and symptomatic again.

To go deeper into understanding the true reason as to why the body reacts the way it is, we recommend connecting with an experienced therapist to help you overcome and surpass your stress and anxiety issues. Research has shown that working with an experienced therapist is an effective treatment for anxiety disorders and stress.
