Strength in Solitude

Gregory Pierre

Recent research found that middle aged people are the loneliest in Europe. According to the Office of National Statistics 30% of UK house holds are now occupied by 1 person, 58% of the adult population in England is single.

Investing in quality time alone is an integral cog to finding long term happiness and mental wellbeing. Here are 3 ways of making the most of this precious time:

Set Time for Solitude during the day

If just being alone with your self and your thoughts is challenging, one should focus upon partaking in activities on your own eg gardening, baking, walking the dog etc.

Reading is also another great option

Turn off tv and screens

Research has shown that giving people time without monitors and screens helps to regulate emotions and emotional wellbeing. Silence has been shown to improve memory and stimulate Brain growth. Giving the senses a break helps to create a sense of calm and relaxation

Soursop

Serotonin is a key hormone for bodily functions as well as stabilizing moods, feelings of happiness, and wellness. It also helps with sleeping. Drinking soursop tea or consuming powdered Soursop fruit promotes the release of serotonin which helps in calming the body. In the West Indies, Soursop is commonly used as a calming agent. In the Netherlands Antilles, the leaves are brewed to make a beverage that enhances sleep. The leaves can also be put into one's pillowcase to enhance sleep. For this reason, a soursop leaf tea can be a great natural supplement to relieve the body of stress and sleep deprivation.
