First of all, lets start at the beginning. The full biological name for the wonderful fruit is Annona Muricata. The first word Annona originates from Greek word anon meaning annual. This of course refers to the annual harvest that this fruit produces. The word muricata refers to the specific fruit baring tree. So there are essentially many different fruits that come under the Annona genus.
The fruit itself is dark green in colour, oval in size – similar to that of a small rugby ball. The skin is completely covered in soft tiny green spikes
Usually the soursop fruit is seen with the following size and weights:
14-40 x 10-18 cm
weighing up to 7 kg
Inside the flesh is white, fibrous and juicy. The seeds shiny, dark brown and approximately 2 cm long
In general, by weight, the Soursop is about:
67.5% edible pulp,
20% peel,
8.5% seeds
4% core.
The fruit is a good source of vitamins B (0.07 mg/100g) and C (20 mg/100 g) and it is very high in fibre.
And the taste – the most delicious you have every tasted. A delicious blend of strawberry, banana with a hint of pineapple.
Why not try it and see.
