5 Healthy Fruits High in Antioxidants

Many nutrient-dense foods are rich in antioxidants, including certain types of berries, nuts, and vegetables. These foods have also been linked to other health benefits and may protect against chronic disease.

Antioxidants

are compounds made in the body and keep the body's cell's healthy by hunting disease causing free radicals and destroying them.

Eating a diet rich in antioxidants increases blood antioxidant levels to reduce oxidative stress and disease risk.

Here are five super healthy foods that are high in antioxidants.

1. Blueberries

Although they are low in calories, blueberries are

packed with nutrients and antioxidants.

Research from test-tube and animal studies has shown that the antioxidants in blueberries may delay aging-related decline in brain function by neutralizing harmful free radicals, reducing inflammation, and altering the expression of certain genes.

Additionally, the antioxidants in blueberries have been shown to reduce risk factors for heart disease, and lower both LDL cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

2. Strawberries

Strawberries are sweet, versatile, and

rich in vitamin C. They also contain a lot of the antioxidant

Anthocyanin. This is the very reason why strawberries are red in colour.

Anthocyanins may help reduce the risk of heart disease by reducing levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and raising HDL (good) cholesterol.

3. Goji berries

Goji berries are rich in vitamins and minerals.

Goji berries contain unique antioxidants known as Lycium barbarum polysaccharides, which have been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease and cancer.

However, while goji berries are nutritious, they can be expensive to eat on a regular basis.

4. Raspberries

Raspberries are a great source of dietary fibre, vitamin C, and manganese.

The antioxidants in raspberries, especially anthocyanins,

may reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. This may reduce the chance of developing heart disease.

That said, most of the evidence for the health benefits of raspberries is from test-tube studies, so more human-focused research is needed.

5. Soursop

Soursop extract has many compounds with antioxidant abilities.

These include:

• tannins

• saponins

• phytosterols

• flavonoids

• anthraquinones

Antioxidants help people stay healthy overall.

Soursop features anti-inflammatory properties that may be used to relieve discomfort. Researchers have supported its use as a folk remedy for pain and inflammatory conditions.

In lab settings Soursop has been shown to block pain receptors and reduced inflammation in rats.

Soursop has also been shown to help people regulate their blood sugar if they have diabetes. The research found that it significantly reduced blood glucose levels in subjects with diabetes.

In addition, despite the subjects consuming less food and water, they did not lose weight. Researchers believe this may be the result of better glucose control.
